Mysteries

All of these early pictures display a different lap counter from the game: instead of "_/_", the lap counter displays "_-_".

Removed Icons/Power-Ups
The first 3 icons are for power-ups removed from the game. The first and third power-ups can be received in the demo through a GameShark code.
- The first is a spring that made you hop extremely high for a single time.
- The second one is hard to tell what it looks like, and its purpose hasn't been revealed in any videos.
- The third one is a red cross (it doesn't look red here because of poor quality), which is just an early icon for the shield power-up.
The four remaining icons are old versions of power-ups still in the game. From left to right: Bowling Bomb, Missile, Aku Aku and Turbo.

Character Icon Comparison
Some icons were changed during the development of the game. The left column shows the early icons, and the right one shows the final icons.

Mystery
Old Creepy Stuff
- Old Bowling Bomb icon.
- Notice how there are huge COCO letters on the hill. They were eventually removed.
- A lot of things is wrong with this picture. For starters, it says the player's in 2nd place, when there are obviously a lot more racers in front of him. The player is also playing as Tiny, but the Tiny icon shows in the 3rd place instead of the 2nd, as indicated. Finally, there are 2 Tinys here. The one the player is controlling, and the one near the COCO letters. How very odd.

Losing in a Solo Race
- The Turbo Boost icon is different from the final.
- The player is racing alone in these tracks, but surprisingly, he's still given a rank (and it's not even 1st place).
- In the last picture, the question marks on the Weapon Crates seem a little different, but it might just be the quality of the picture.

Roo's Green Tubes:
- This is the track "Roo's Tubes", but it's clearly a whole lot greener in this early picture. It's also noticeable that there are different supports around the glass, instead of the usual metal plates.
- Early Turbo icon.

General Oddities
Submitted by Cyberguy
All of these pictures show Crash and Polar's early character icons. Not only that, but there isn't a single one in which the icons on the left match the player's current rank. Some of the pictures sport previously mentioned changes, like the letters "COCO" and the old bomb icon.

Early Warp Vortex
- The Warp Vortex shown here is surrounded by a checkered pattern, which doesn't really happen in the game itself.
- The Trophy floating inside the Vortex has a silver colour, as opposed to the usual gold.

Lap Mishaps
- The lap counter indicates that the player is running through the first lap. However, there is no way the player could have gotten to this part of the track in such little time (0:00:98). Furthermore, the text below the timer indicates that the player has already completed 3 laps, which conflicts with the lap counter and the fact that the race isn't over yet.
- The boost bar is shown red, even though the player isn't power-sliding.

Is it Over?
- The numbers on top of the character icons are all shown red, which means everyone has already finished the race. The odd bit is that the entire HUD is still showing.
- Because of the previous factor, it looks like before the game was finished, the HUD would remain on-screen after a race was over. This is further evidenced by the camera angle and Crash's position in the HUD- even though he's in front of Tiny, the icons indicate that Tiny is ahead of him. This most likely means that the HUD would freeze once a race was over.
- Even though Crash has 10 Wumpa Fruits, the counter isn't glowing. However, this could be because the glow flashes in and out rapidly, and the screenshot could have been taken in an instant when the glow was flashing out.

Beta Oxide Station
Oxide Station used to be quite different in ye olde Beta version:
- Screenshots 1 and 2: a completely removed portion of the track that would go from a ramp into one of four possible tubes.
- Screenshots 3 to 5: the low-gravity area used to have turbo pads pointing at wrong directions. The middle bit had these unseen floor textures as well.
- Screenshot 6: Right after the low-gravity area, the tunnel leading to the famous big fall used to be oddly covered in turbo pads (even on the walls and the ceiling).
- In this version, Crash is racing alone, but numbers for other characters are still shown. Crash's old icon is used here.
- This isn't Time Trial mode (otherwise the player would get no weapons and wouldn't be ranked). As a lot of odd things are going on in this version, and since Oxide Station has a big variety in layout, it's possible that they were using it to test physics.

Red Light
The mine carts in Dragon Mines used to have red lights instead of white.

Cortex's Airship
- The airships used to have Cortex's face on them, instead of Pinstripe's. Since Cortex already had his own track (Cortex Castle), this was probably changed so that it would be Pinstripe's.
- Wrong character positions again.

Multiplayer Differences
- The first screen shows coloured borders for each player's screen, something that is not present in the game.
- The second screen has the word "Points" instead of the usual skull icon.

Texture Issues
- The fence on the left is coloured pinkish due to a texture bug.
- Crash is the only one driving the track, yet position numbers for other characters are still shown. Hacc explains: "The reason for the numbers being displayed like that is because they have the number of players playing value set as 1P in VS. mode."

Unique Start Lines
The start line in each track used to be unique. For some reason, they were all changed to a ribbon saying "CTR" in the final version.

Beta Tiger Temple
Tiger Temple used to be a bit different. When the game was roughly 30% complete, some parts of the scenery seemed to be covered in ice or something blue (screenshot to the left), and a big ol' moon was present in the sky (screenshot to the right).
