Crash Bandicoot / クラッシュ バンディクー

  • Species: Eastern Barred Bandicoot (Perameles Gunni)
  • Gender: Male
  • Kind: Good
«Whoa!»
«Pancakes!» - Crash of the Titans

Crash BandicootCrash Bandicoot is a heroic marsupial, a defender of good, and a bit of a nut. Originally a simple Eastern Barred Bandicoot, Crash was captured by Dr. Neo Cortex and turned into the subject of his mad experiments, along with several other marsupials. With the help of a machine called the Evolvo-Ray, the maniacal Cortex genetically modified Crash into a smarter and anthropomorphic creature, also known as a mutant. In other words, Crash now walks and acts like people, though the latter thing is a bit debatable. Cortex took notice of Crash's potential, so in an attempt to rule the World, he decided to make Crash the general in his army of super animals. Things didn't go as he planned, however, since his mind-controlling device, the Cortex Vortex, failed to brainwash Crash, as it seems like his species is immune to the device. Crash was promptly banished by Cortex, unaware he had just created an arch-nemesis for life. Thus, Crash has since been foiling Cortex's plans for world domination.

Always the laid-back fellow, Crash enjoys basking in the warm sun, sleeping and dancing (he often displays a little choreography of his own). And then there is spinning. Crash loves spinning. Whether it's against a foe or just the random crate here and there, the fuzzy marsupial takes great pleasure in twirling the lights out of it. After all, they don't call him Crash for nothing. He is almost always in a good mood and is generally light-hearted and silly. Crash is usually silent, but he occasionally speaks in what sounds like complete gibberish. Despite this, everyone else can understand him. He feeds mostly on Wumpa fruits and is a fan of all derived products.

Crash is well-meaning and forgiving, and even though there's a bunch of evil scientists and mutants out there trying to get rid of him, he usually holds no grudges against them (or maybe he just doesn't care), provided they aren't messing with his home turf or his family. Because of this, Crash is much more tolerant of his enemies then they are of him, something that is clearly evident with his arch-nemesis, Cortex. His one big love interest to date was Tawna, a female bandicoot who received the same mutation treatment as him. Rescuing Tawna was his first incentive for defeating Cortex. Despite succeeding at that, the two of them never seemed to have gotten romantically involved (or at least not for long).

The orange bandicoot now lives in Wumpa Island with his strange but well-meaning family. Coco is Crash's biological sister, whom he is very protective of, even though she is just as tough as him. He also has an adoptive big brother of sorts named Crunch, a big burly bandicoot who spends most of his time trying to set up a good example, often in awkward or confusing ways. Both of his siblings are mutants just like him. Last but certainly not least is Aku Aku, Crash's trustworthy sidekick - the spirit of an ancient benevolent witch doctor, whose physical representation is a flying wooden mask.

He may not look very intimidating, but Crash is quite a cunning hand-to-hand fighter, relying mostly on his quick wit and agility to defeat his foes. As mentioned, spinning is Crash's favourite attack. He can turn into a furious orange tornado that devastates everything in his path. Other signature moves include his slide-tackle and the fearsome belly flop, which is strong enough to break through iron. And even though he may be a melee fighter, that doesn't mean Crash will skip on the heavy ordnance when it's time to (literally) bring out the big gun - a good old-fashioned Wumpa fruit bazooka. Additionally, Crash can borrow Aku Aku's mystical powers for protection or even mind control - an ability called Jacking. Crash's main weaknesses include his gullibility and inability to swim, but he has the advantage of being strangely immune (or allergic, depending on how you see it) to all kinds of mind control, including those that do affect his bandicoot companions.

Crash's change from an ordinary marsupial to a heroic - if somewhat questionable - defender has put in more places than he could ever dream of. His eternal fight against evil has led him to travel almost everywhere in the World, as well as journeying through time, galaxies and even dimensions. All in a day's work for Crash Bandicoot.

Trivia:

  • Crash originally started out as a wombat in early designs, with the appropriate name of Willy Wombat. The most noticeable peculiarity in this design was his long tail. Crash was created by Naughty Dog and designed by Charles Zembillas.
  • His name comes from his tendency to break crates and other stuff in general.
  • Though his fanbase is very large all around the globe, Crash is one of, if not the most popular Western platformer protagonist in Japan.
  • He was featured on the MTV Multiplayer blog as part of the article "Video Game Animals — Nominations For The Best Of The Rest", which was dedicated to the animal species that hadn't been featured in their previous articles.
  • In 2007, Crash became the mascot for the School and Youth Programs, a part of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Crash Bandicoot (2/3/CTR/XS/N-Tranced/Fusion)

Crash 2/3/CTR/XS/N-Tranced/Fusion

This is a much more detailed model, and one of the most well-known of the lot due to how many appearances it made. Crash has gotten much more expressive and more well-defined in general. His eyebrows appear different and smaller and his eyes are more detailed, now with green irises. Crash's nose is smaller, but his belly button is bigger. His arms and legs are thicker and his feet are smaller. Crash's shoes have less laces.

Note 1: In CTR, Crash's eyes and shoes have gradients, making them look less plain.

Note 2: The Crash sprite in XS, N-Tranced and Fusion uses animation frames ripped from this model (see more below).

Crash Bandicoot (The Wrath of Cortex)

Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex

Crash is even more detailed than before. The insides of his ears are furry and they're not dark anymore (same colour as the fur around his mouth). The eyebrows are fuzzier and the nose has gotten bigger again. His teeth are now individual, rather than a white stripe for each row. Crash's shoulders are noticeably wider, a fact that makes his lack of a neck even more evident. Crash's belly button is now gone for good. Gone, but not forgotten. Crash's jeans are now folded at the ends and they have a label on the back, much like real-life jeans.

His facial expressions in this game make him look a little too confused most of the time.

Note: The Xbox version of the game uses a technique that gives Crash realistic fur.

Crash Bandicoot (Twinsanity)

Crash Twinsanity

Crash has been modernized for this game, much like everyone else. His hair has gotten much spikier and pointy, and now it's brown instead of the previous red. Crash's eyebrows are less dense than ever before. The inside of his ears is dark again. Crash's pupils are rounder, smaller and shinier. The nose is back to being smaller yet again. He has visible gums along with most characters in this game. Crash's fur is a bit lighter (especially the fur on his belly, which now connects directly to his muzzle - something that would stick for subsequent games).

His wardrobe has changed a bit: the gloves now have openings on the back; he's wearing a belt; his jeans have more realistic textures applied to them and are no longer folded at the ends; there are metallic knee-pads attached to the jeans; the shoes are remarkably similar to All-Stars (a real-life brand), but with a "C" on the sides instead of the All-Stars logo.

Like all the other characters in this game, Crash has 5 fingers instead of the usual 4 (if you consider thumbs fingers).

Crash has gotten much dumber in this game, which adds to comedy relief. He also almost constantly and is completely silent during the entire game.

Crash Bandicoot (Tag Team Racing)

This model seems like a mixture between the original Crash and the Twinsanity one. His hair is back to the old style and colouring and his eyes aren't shiny anymore. Crash's head is smaller, changing the overall body ratio. Most changes, however, apply to his clothes.

The gloves lost the openings (but still have holes in the middle). The jeans are folded at the ends, resembling the ones from The Wrath of Cortex, and are generally blander than in Twinsanity. The shoes look like those from Crash 2, but the laces are different and there are purple stripes on the soles.

He seems less dumb and more expressive than in Twinsanity and he speaks gibberish now. He's also become an immature bully, tormenting chickens and innocent people all the time for no reason other than because he can.

Crash Bandicoot (Crash of the Titans)

Crash went through a massive design overhaul, along with everyone else in this game.

Crash is now considerably shorter in height, because of the smaller legs. His head is slightly bigger when compared to his body. Instead of the usual red high mohawk, his hair has become a brown longer ridge that partly extends to his back. Speaking of which, Crash is noticeably much furrier than before, with jagged tips around his muzzle, elbows and his entire front. His ears are smaller and dented on the sides. The eyes are bigger and sport brown eyebrows instead of black ones (they're also floaty like in many animated cartoons). A fang is present in each side of his mouth (a somewhat late addition, not visible in this early picture). More noticeably, Crash gained mystical-looking tattoos on his arms, and for the first time ever, he is not wearing gloves. The fur on his palms is now cream-coloured, just like the fur on his stomach. His clothes changed slightly; there is a new belt, different jeans and a new pair of shoes that have paw prints on the bottom. Overall, Crash looks much younger.

There are also a few notable personality changes. This Crash combines the gibberish introduced in Tag Team Racing with the light-hearted nature from before, and he prefers to save people rather than bullying them again. He is also much stronger, which is evident in his new combat techniques. This makes up for a more heroic Crash.

Crash's fur is considerably brighter, and his hair and whiskers aren't as spiked as before, though his shoulders are jagged now. His head is a bit smaller. His legs are taller and much thicker. The tattoos on his arms seem watermarked and less spiral-like. He has slightly visible nails underneath the fur on his fingers. His clothes and shoes are slightly different as usual, and because of the longer legs, his pants look like shorts now.

Out of comparison

Crash Bandicoot (Crash Team Racing) CTR (In-Kart)
All in-kart models from CTR are much more polygonal versions than usual, since 8 of the usual character models on screen at the same time would be more than the PS1 could handle.
Crash Bandicoot (Bash) Crash Bash

The Crash Bash model is a low detail resemblance of the second Naughty Dog model. Crash doesn't change expressions, except when he is zapped by something in Polar Push games (showing a shocked expression). There is a more detailed model used in the intro, which is basically the same with moving eyes, mouth and a tongue.
Crash Bandicoot (XS/N-Tranced) Crash Bandicoot XS/N-Tranced
Though Vicarious Visions used the Naughty Dog model to rip the frames they needed, they still created a low detail model of their own, to add frames they couldn't find in previous games.
Crash Bandicoot (Crash Nitro Kart/Fusion) Crash Nitro Kart/Fusion cutscenes and mini-games

This is a more detailed version of the previous model with a few differences. He has bigger, fuzzier eyebrows, smaller eyes, green irises, lighter fur, different jeans and his belly button is less visible. The FMVs from this game give Crash some textures that make him look very furry.
Crash Bandicoot (Tag Team Racing Japan)

CrashTTR is the first Crash game to introduce a different character model for Crash in the Japanese version. He looks like what he always has in Japanese art (resembling the guy in the suit from the Japanese Crash ads). He also has the famous Crash Dance animation, which the Japanese love (it was originated there).

Though the body proportions are a lot different, he has the same height as the model from the original version of CrashTTR.

CBB was the first Crash game to be developed by a Japanese team. This gave the characters the looks they've always had in Japanese artwork and promotions.
Some of the main differences between Japanese and standard Crash are a much larger head, Pac-Man eyes and different shoes.

Much like Crash Tag Team Racing, CBB gave Crash a second model for the game, to better accommodate countries that are used to a particular appearance (in this case though, the Japanese model was the original one). Crash's model outside Japan is heavily based on the Twinsanity model, with the exception of the different body proportions (which seem to be the same as Japanese Crash's) and, of course, a much lower polygon count.

Like all CBB models, it is cel-shaded, giving it cartoony visuals (not visible here).

Crash Bandicoot (Crash of the Titans GBA) Crash of the Titans (Prototype/GBA)
Though the image on the left may be a sprite, it was created from an existing 3D model which looked the same.

This was Crash's prototype look in Crash of the Titans. The final model is quite a bit different (see here), and in comparison to that one, this model has some notable differences: for starters, his eyebrows are just rectangles with one almost always higher than the other one. His eyes aren't the same and his face in general is different. Curiously, Crash was rarely seen showing his teeth with this model, something that happens a lot in Crash of the Titans. The pants are light-blue and the shoes are black and red. More noticeably, Crash had no tattoos at this point yet.

The prototype look was at one point used in all three versions of Crash of the Titans. A few screenshots of the main version showing this model were released. The same goes for the DS version, which is a more curious case - though they did eventually change Crash to resemble his final look, they did so from the model they had already created. This is quite evident when you look at the eyebrows, which were unchanged. The GBA version, on the other hand, was finished so early that it actually uses sprites based on the prototype model in the retail game (which is where the picture on the left comes from).

Crash Bandicoot (Nitro Kart 3D) Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D
Crash has his Crash of the Titans look, but his model is a lot less detailed and he lacks the tattoos. The car he's driving is the same one from the cover of Crash Tag Team Racing.
