UPDATE: The game has been cancelled.
The bizarre (and unconfirmed) rumour of a new racing game has certainly surprised a lot of people. It comes to us in the form of an online portfolio from one of High Impact Games' developers, and it appears to have the provisory name of (wait for it) Crash Team Racing. If you're scratching your head in confusion, relieve yourself in knowing you're not the only one.
Though the supposed game shares its name with the classic Naughty Dog racer, it isn't known in the slightest whether it has anything in common with it beyond that. Like many other Crash games, the name will likely change during development (it's worth noting that Crash Nitro Kart was at one point called Crash Team Racing 2, for example). The platforms listed on the portfolio are the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360 and the Wii.
This project would make sense when you think about Activision's recent plans. The easiest (and probably most lucrative) thing to do at the moment is another racing game. The video-games in the portfolio are ordered from newest to older, and since Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier came out just a few months ago, it would appear this title has entered production fairly recently, plus the fact that it's listed as a prototype. This would also fit in with the recent layoffs at Radical Entertainment - now that the previous Crash developers are no longer working with the license, another studio would need to take the helm.
But while the portfolio does seem legit, it is far from an official announcement. With so many other factors to be taken into consideration, you're advised to take this rumour with a grain of salt. In fact, even if it does turn out to be real, you never know when it might be cancelled before an official announcement is made (and this has happened quite a few times before).
One thing's for sure, though - it's certainly nice to see something about the bandicoot after a period of lingering uncertainty.
All credit goes to Hero of Legend for the news.
