Well this came out of nowhere. The lovable bandicoot has finally returned after a long time of convoluted twists and secrecy. The new game, which is already out, is a sequel to what quickly became the best-selling iPhone application a few years back. Can you guess what it is? Give up? It's...

Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart... 2.

Arguably sporting the most confusing name in the series, CBNK 2 has just been announced and released by Activision for the iPhone and iPod Touch, with a price tag of €7.99/$9.99. No, it's not related to the cancelled kart game that got everyone's attention last month. This one was created by Polarbit (the team behind the first game), and it certainly comes with a fair share of surprises beyond coming right out of left field. You can find screenshots and additional information about the game in its freshly-baked section, but please note it's currently unfinished. Thanks go to Alen for providing some general insight about the game.

This definitely seems to go in line with Activision's current philosophy. CEO of Activision Blizzard, Robert Kotick, once said, and I quote:

---

"With respect to the franchises that don’t have the potential to be exploited every year across every platform with clear sequel potential that can meet our objectives of over time becoming $100 million plus franchises, that’s a strategy that has worked very well for us."

---

Someone at Activision must've done the maths - the original game sold extremely well and was set in a genre that can be recycled into sequels as seen fit, namely kart racing. It also had the advantage of being less expensive to produce, being a mobile phone game. At the moment, Activision certainly doesn't seem to want to take any risks and would rather make something that brings them money. I can only think of this reason to justify the new game's existence and I fear that digitally distributed spin-offs are all Crash will be doing from now on. I'd love to be mistaken, but Activision has made it perfectly clear they're only interested in cows that can be milked to the bone, and this new game is indicative of that.

Hopefully not, anyway.
